A light at the end of the tunnel for graduates?

Thursday 12th February 2015

A recent report predicts that graduate vacancies for 2015 will rise by almost 12%.

Employers predict another double-digit rise in graduate vacancies in the coming year, according to the Association of Graduate Recruiters (AGR) who recently published the winter edition of its bi-annual survey. The survey predicts an 11.9% rise in vacancies for the coming recruitment round, following a predicted increase of 10% last year. This demonstrates a sustained optimism amongst AGR members in the context of a steadily growing UK economy.

Whilst this is positive news the increase poses questions as AGR members reported 1,422 unfilled vacancies in 2014. Stephen Isherwood, Chief Executive of the AGR, said: “Graduate vacancies continue to grow year on year and graduates are still more likely to be employed than non-graduates. But tensions persist. Employers would have recruited more graduates, over 1,400 more, if they could have found enough candidates with the right mix of skills.”

Also highlighted was over a quarter of all graduate roles last year were filled by people who have previously worked for the same employer i.e. via work experience or internship.  “The importance of work experience cannot be stressed to students enough,” Isherwood continued. “Candidates that understand the world of work, understand their own skills and can translate that into a compelling proposition are much more likely to be successful in the jobs market”

BCL Graduates has noted a huge increase in law firms signing up and downloading legal graduate CVs to fill their graduate level vacancies towards the latter end of 2014 and this has not abated so far in 2015. So in conclusion that whilst the growth is a positive one it highlights that work experience is almost as essential as educational qualifications in gaining that coveted graduate placement.
